Any tricks to get a retic to eat???

darrylv Sep 25, 2004 01:13 PM

She's a 2.5 month old albino retic. Breeder says she would take live adult mouse, but she hasn't. I've tried live and pre-killed adult mice and fuzzy rats. Any suggestions? Thanks for the info and help.

How long have you had her and how is she set up? Everything I've ever kept would eat the day I got them home. Retics took me 2 weeks! I suggest giving them a hide box they can squize into! Throw a blanket over them so that they feel secure! Leave them alone, don't even look at them. Then try and feed a week or 2 later.

sadly it was a live adult mouse. I'm not a big fan of feeding live prey because of the risks, but I gave it a try (took her about 6 hours to finally strike and swallow!) She's very docile and doesn't have that "Normal" Retic insane feeding response (actually she seemed frightened of the mouse, dead or alive). She's the most docile retic I've ever had, and I hope this is not a sign of any problems. She flickers her tongue and is active out of the cage so I think she's healthy. How should I try to introduce pre-killed or frozen thawed rodents? Thanks for the help.

My baby tiger was finiky about eating when i got her, she was only 6 weeks old at the time, she was supposed to be on f/t when i got her but she just wouldn't take it for me, i have talked to a few other people with retics, and they say they can be like that as babies, like they are still figuring out how to be a retic, now she takes f/t rats from me without a problem, sometimes she will strike and coil it, other times she just sits there and if i leave it in with her she takes it on her own. Hopefully you can get yours switched over to f/t pretty soon, either try something live, and follow it up with f/t, or try waiting her out a little bit to see if that will make her take it. Hope this gives a little bit of help..

It worked like a charm, she took the mouse a few hours after I threw it on the cage. How long should I leave the blanket over the cage? Thanks again and have a good one.

I usually leave it over them for a week or 2. I give them new water but other then that they are left totally alone. I don't start handling any of my animals for a few feedings.
