Same gophers???

icedearthgoddess Sep 25, 2004 01:39 PM

In the pics they look almost the same, but their heads (in actuality) looked much more different in color. The 1st gopher had a dull greyish head, with a hint of light gold coloratiion. However the 2nd gopher had a very brilliant gold color on its head. I am wondering if maybe they are two different subspecies. If you can help me out and tell me what you think, I'd really appreciate it! By the way, the were found on the same road. Thanks!!!

Hello
What area are they from ?
Many of us on this forum have discussion about intergrades and color variable colors and patterns in the same localitys .Infact we had a good one about 2 months ago about Yorba Linda Locality Gophers

I see natural color varity in the same clutches of pits all the time and I see it all the time out road cruzing . Most like they are the same specie but you never know in intergrade areas.

They are from Lancaster and we have both pacific and great basin gophers here. These two gophers were also not on the same road (I made a mistake in the post), but they werent too far off. The first one almost looked anery. The second one was more colorful. I have trouble telling the two subspecies apart.

I'm dont know the Lancaster area . They look like Pacific gophers too me . Both the Great Basin and the Pacific are highly variable in colors and patterns . I live Great Basin country . With Great Basin I look for neck striping but that is not allways true . I think Great Basin are more slender .
