Male digging...

the Rigger Sep 25, 2004 02:05 PM

I heard this noise coming from his tank, he is digging like mad in his hide. He has torn all the paper towels up in there. Why would he be doing that?

I wouldn't worry. Usually my females dig in their humid hide and kick the vermiculate out. I changed to paper towels and they haven't since. I'm not exactly sure why they do it but I suppose they are trying to build a burrow kinda thing.

Maybe it lost something like its keys or wallet and it is trying to find it.

In their natural habitat, they have little burrows that they have dug out the crevices in rock. These crevices usually have sand blown into them and they have to dig through the sand to get to the burrows that were there naturally or were created by digging. The burrows also have sand in them, they lay their eggs and sleep in these areas because they are cooler than the "outside" and have more humidity. He is probably just digging to find a cooler bit of "sand" (which in the natural habitat would be a layer or 2 down)or is just trying to make a littel hole to sleep in.
