Chico won't eat crickets dusted with parazap, or drink the tea.

CollardGuy Sep 25, 2004 03:17 PM

Should I try to open his mouth with something? What can I use that won't hurt him?

I can tell he is getting frustrated with me, squeezing tea out all over his face... But he hasn't tried to bite yet.

well i think it is rather easy to give medicine to collareds. all you have to do is place your pinky, ring and middle finger so that they are holding the body of the lizard and then place the collareds head against your index finger and then with your thumb, pull down its lip. take a needleless syringe with the medicine and fill up the crack where his lips are separated. usually they will start to lap at it but if they are stubborn, you can always plug their noseholes and they will open their mouths. if the dose of medicine is larger than the crack of their mouths then just repeat the steps

if you just go to a vets office, they will probably give you a needleless syringe if you ask. you can get a syringe at a pharmacy but i don't know how easy the needle comes out. i think they may sell them at a pharmacy because my sister has some to give medicine to her human children.
i hope this helps

and leave it in with him. If hes hungry he will eat it. Just let him get a tiny taste, and when he eats one, then put more on next time, keep increasing.

You can also not give him anything for a day or 2 then drop one in thats got some on, he may be hungry enough after a day or 2 to grab it. Just experiment.

Was he eating well before you put parazap on the crickets?

I only feed a sick lizard, or a wc who refuses food, that is when I intervene.

No he did not eat well before parazap. He's never eaten well. He just occasionally chased after crickets, and sometimes caught them, maybe he has ADD. Thanks for the info about mouth opening, I've always found it hard to open lizards mouths.

well maybe you can give him some liquid parazap for a few days by dropping it in the crack of his mouth. let it kick in and then see if he is more interested in eating the crickets and then maybe you will not have to upset him by holding him down. i did not realize that you had to treat an infected lizard for two weeks. that is a lot of holding down and upsetting
