Hatchling advice needed PLEASE

Sasheena Jun 26, 2003 11:46 PM

Hey, I've been trying to give my new hatchlings some space and just checking to make sure they have a damp paper towel. Was looking at them today and the one that had me the most worried at hatching has me even more worried today. I've included a picture. I'm afraid that when it left the egg it pulled some of its innards out. Should I wait it out? It's either euthanize or wait. The snake has a good tongue-flick, and is the most attractive in the bunch. Doesn't seem to be in pain. But I'm afraid that this little one doesn't have any chance to make it.

It's difficult to tell from the pic exactly what that is.
Are you sure it's not excess umbilical cord? I would wait it out and monitor the situation closely.
Keep us updated, and good luck!
Cheers, Bill

I'm not sure it's excess umbilical cord, or if it's innards. And even if it is innards, I'm not sure it's a lethal situation or what. I'm just concerned. Should I have the baby on dry or moist paper towel, I'm afraid this "thing" will adhere to a dry paper towel and be pulled out further.... but if it is extra umbilical it would need to dry up and fall off. I've never had hatchlings straight out of the egg, and I'm worried about this one. The rest of the hatchlings are doing fine. I'm just waiting for the first shed so I can see if they'll chow down without a problem.

If it is the little snakey's intestines is there anything to be done?

I can't tell what that is either but keep it on moist paper towels definitely.

it will dry up and fall off within a few days. Most snakes empty the yolk sac prior to hatching, I guess this one was really anxious to get out!

Should be fine, just make sure it doesn't get stuck to the subtrate or vice versa for the next few days. Keep the snake on slightly damp paper towels while this is happening and it should be fine.
