Ventura County CA Herps

cornking Sep 25, 2004 04:47 PM

I have been searching at night (7 to 11) in the Thousand Oaks, Moorpark And Agoura areas of Ventura and LA county, and have only come across two rattlers and nothing more with about 35 hours of herping. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with any tips on where to go or special techniques to help me find more snakes to photograph. I would especially like to see a California Mountain King or any boids if posible.

This time of year, it really helps to herp in areas with permanent water. This holds especially true in CA. Your best bet in Sept/Oct is in finding young of the year. If you want zonata, you need to be on water, especially in Ventura Co. Your best bet, however, will be to wait until Spring. BTW, there is a GREAT book out there by some guy named Brian Hubbs. By reading that book, you could train a circus monkey to find zonata LOL.

You will have to go closer to the beach, into the canyon/creek areas of the Santa Monica Mountains to find zonata.

With warm weather you could try night driving them or hiking in the mornings or late afternoons.

Mountain kings are easier to find by fielding. Rosy boas like it cold out, so you may need to hunt later, and in the desert areas. Drive slow and watch for babies, thats all we have seen lately in Lancaster.
