sealing driftwood.What should I use?

cee4 Sep 25, 2004 06:08 PM

And another Q. Does anyone have any experience as to how easy the sealed wood would be to keep clean? I have a couple Dragons that love to poop on the wood and it makes for difficult cleaning when unsealed..Im hoping if I seal it with something kinda slick it would help alot in the cleaning process. And how would it hold up to high heat as a basking site? Thanks Cee

A friend of mine uses boiled linseed oil, verathayne to do driftwood pieces, i don't know about the humidity etc for a snake but there is a start for sealing. Check with a site that does that sorta thing, act interested in buying some and ask for health reasons what they use to seal theirs

Boiled linseed oil alone is a good sealer, use it warm by setting the open can out in the sun and apply with a brush. Wipe off excess and let driftwood sit in the sun until dry. Repeat several times until it will not absorb any more. You will want to reapply once or twice yearly. Linseed oil is safe to use with reptiles and does provide a very waterproof barrier.

Hope this helps.

If it's cured and dried like I described above it should not be a problem. It will dry very hard even in your application, it will wear though that's why you need to reapply from time to time. I think the nice thing about it is it won't chip or crack and while it will darken the wood it leaves it with a very natural looking finish.
