humidity question

lissag25 Jun 26, 2003 11:51 PM

this is going to sound really backwards.. but i have trouble keeping the humidity up in my wd's cages in the summer because we have the air conditioner on.. outside it is anywhere from 60% to 80% humidity ..but can get to cold to have them outside in the summer.. any ideas on what to do about this.. they've got plenty of live plants, misting of their cage 4x plus a day.. water basin with pump...and most their cage covered....on a good day i can get about 60 % humidity... and thats the max... my comfort zone is 75 plus .. since i had a couple come down with RI's last summer...any ideas would be appreciated ..

p.s the humidity is great in the winter it is just crappy when the A.C. is on... plus i can't close the A.C. vent the WDs are in my bedroom and i can't handle the heat and the heat lamps without some relief... sorry for long post

Hmm I have a similar problem but I live in Phoenix Az, and its soo dry out, usually the humidity is around 7% year round outside maybe 25% or 30 in our monsoon season. I cant keep mine a constant 60% plus, it hovers around 50% and i can only mist it really well once a day, but it drys out after a few hours.

Best advice: Get a timed misting system or humidifier.

Check out the Big Apple Misting System over at bigappleherp.com. Works like a charm. It's basically like a produce mister, that you set to run for 1-4 mins at a time, up to 13 (I think) times per day. That's the best solution I've found. One suggestion though, if you do go this route, keep the timmer in an accesable place for the first couple of weeks as you will need to adjust it. I finnaly thought I got my timing all perfect, and it was for a week or so, then the ground got to damp to accept more water (looked like a swamp all of a sudden), so I had to re-adjust. After fiddling around with it for two or so weeks, I haven't touched the timer in months.
