I was up in Ohio today, checking out the show. But I didnt see many Asian Elaphe. Only a few Blues, and that was it! Anybody know why Old World Ratsnakes arent as popular? Or just any ideas about it? I havent found many at all come to think of it, at any shows really... Is there something I am missing???

I'm going to try and post my pictures of my Blues tonight, that I got in Indiana last month! I still havent gotten around to it!

for the market,
usually expert breeders prefer keep ball python morph and boa morph, and in the colubridae family lampropeltis morph, that are easy to sell and usually easy to breed having a lot of information about to care them; and a cage is more easy to heat then to cold. In the Hamm show here in europe there were 1.2 wonderful baby vaillanti cb for 1200€ the trio and the breeder didn't sold them (I finished money,)on the contrary expensive royal morph were sold. I reserved 1.0 taeniura calico and 0.1 het calico for a good price (now I have only 1.0 het calico, the breeder not sexed them well and now I have to wait for march for a calico female).
I hope this will help to have "low" prices on asian ratsnakes, but on the other side is difficult sell hatchlings and more breeders could choose to breed other snakes.

I don't have any yet, so I guess I really shouldn't say that I love them, but from of all the photos and descriptions of temperment, etc. I'd much prefer to own Asian snakes rather than the boring Obsoleta animals that are so popular around here (sorry Obsoleta fans, they just aren't my style). I've only been able to find Tiawans in my area of Ohio, but I haven't looked too hard yet. I plan to get my first beauty next year, probably from Rob and Amy Zerkle.

I hope, over the years to build up a collection of mainly Asian Elaphe, so not everyone dislikes them, but I do agree they are hard to find at least locally.

If you don't mind ordering them online there are quite a few people who you can contact.

Because of the large enclosures they need as adults, many breeders probably don't want to keep them because it would limit the amount of snakes they could keep.

HURRAY!
I got my Blues from the Zerkles! They are great animals and the Zerkle's are great people, very helpful!
What part of Ohio are you in? I'm in Northern Ky.
Are you in the Cincy Herp Society? I am FINALLY going to my first meeting next week. Something has happened each time i have tried to go for the last 5 months! ha!

I live near Cleveland and I'm a member of NOAH (Northern Ohio Association of Herpetologists).

Have you ever been to the Kentucky show in Shelbyville? I've never been there, but I know 2 vendors who sell there (neither sell Asians though). You might want to check it out since you're kind of near there.

I've only been to the Ky show once. It was a big let down! There was only 4 tables set up, I dont know if i went on an off day or an off show, when not many vendrs turned up or what was wrong. Anyone else been? Did I just go on a bad day or something? It was the one earlier this month. Compared to the all ohio and the Indiana shows i was really disapointed.

Amanda,

I grew up in Berea, Ohio. NOAH was such a fantastic organization and I learned a lot from those folks. Really shaped my life in many ways, actually.

The only person I have any contact with anymore in Paul Bodnar.

I've heard NOAH is still a great group, albeit quite different from my time.

Yeah I am an Asian fan, I have mandrins, coxi and mollendorffi, the vivid colors make up for the [bleep]y attitudes. I am not an obsoleta fan, most of our native rats are dull compared to say a mandarin, plenty of mandarins out there right now for 250-350 each.

I'm keeping Asians currently (Mandarins, Leopards, and a Taiwan) but I still love the North American rat snakes. I've kept Black rats, Black/Yellow intergrades, Grays, Yellows, Everglades, and Texans (and the obligatory Corn snake) and though they are easier to keep than most Asians, they can teach you a lot. I think we are lucky to live in a place where there are such a variety of interesting, reasonably priced, easy to keep snakes. It's great to be able to observe local snakes (Black rats are really common in my area) and see what they're doing to get ideas about how to keep them. I wouldn't have a clue on how to go about finding a Mandarin in the wild so I have to go totally on other's experiences. The learning curve is a lot steeper and more expensive!
Just a thought...

Beautiful animals.

I've only caught a glimps of a garter snake in the parking lot, and as a young girl a nest of copper heads, (which sadly my father killed) and I cried and cried, maybe that is where my snake fancy came from? the horrid death of all those baby snakes!!!! My dad is like Indiana Jones when it comes to snakes though not as brave.
