Here it goes, This is my Blue Boy
Heres both of them
My girly (she has a blue DOT on the top of her head... real easy to spot!)

Ok that one isnt working but here is another of her
Finally, the poor guy gets acknowledged!
He was sold to me as a Texas rat, but I’m dubious. He is as mellow as can be, has NEVER once struck at me, and do you think his color is a bit off? Regardless he is my baby doll and first snake! So, mutt or not I adore him.

Looks like a hi orange Texas rat to me. I could be wrong.
Cheers!
Yeah all the others I have seen are darker... and with his mellow personality i just wasnt sure. People have been suprised that he hasnt bit me yet... are Texas rats really that bad?

Everyone I've ever met has been a devil, but all but one of those was wild caught. Perhaps all the captive breeding has bred out some of their aggressiveness. Just a thought.
Yup, I'm with Tempest. That's an orange phase TX Rat, I'd be surprised if it were anything else. I currently have one female, also an orange phase. She's a bit hissy, and will start rattling and striking if you're not gone after about a minute or two.

Could also be from the Flame Texas rat snake line, which have varying percentages of Everglades/yellow/Texas rat blood. Kathy Love used to outcross her white leucistic Texas rat snakes with local (Florida) yellow/everglades rat snakes to strengthen the line. Some of the normal babies were wholesaled off and ended up in the Columbus circle. Yours might be descended from one of those?

Now this may be hard to believe, but I swear on all things holy; last night after i sang his praises, I went to clean his cage out and feed him. Pete rattled his tail at me and hissed!!!! IT IS A FIRST!!!!! I WAS IN SHOCK!! It only lasted a moment and he came right out no problem, didnt strike, and he sat and watched me as always while i clean his cage. Maybe he is growing up?! And soon enough he will be biting me and not letting me handle him! How sad!
I'm still a little shocked by it, because he has been a complete DOLL since day one! But he was still real calm when igot him out !
and how ironic that I finally post his photo and say how sweet he is and then he does that! YESH!!!
Oh yeah, I did get him at the All Ohio show a long while ago...

Usually they calm down more as they age. You probably just surprised him by moving too fast or something. He still let you handle him so he knows hes in no danger. He may do that every now and then but I doubt that he will stop letting you handle him.
Snakes are defensive by nature. they always are thinking everything is going to eat them, especially as babies. theres not a point where they just suddenly turn mean....not that i've ever heard of a snake being at least. you probably did just startle him, but its not unusual for a snake to rattle the tail. my texas bairdis do all the time and it freaked me out at first but im used to it now so i think its kinda cool.

1.1 Texas Bairds (Jose and Rosa)
0.1 Blue Beauty (Brunhilde)
Oh he's not a baby anymore. Nearly 2 years old now, the pic was when he was younger though. Oh i know he didnt just suddenly turn mean. It was just a suprise to me because i have had him for nearly 2 years and that had never happened with him, so of course i probibly just woke him up or scared him! It was just a BIG SUPRISE to me, and it was ironic that i posted how diffrent he is and calm from other texas and then the same night he does that.
He hasnt done it sense so Im sure it was just a case of me bugging him.
Is it all new world rats that do the tail rattle? or just black adn texas??
Hope everyone has a good day!!

My Mandarins and Taiwan will both tail rattle. So it's not just New World ratsnakes.

Ok heres another one;
Is it at a certain age that they start doing it? Has anyone seeing hatchlings do it? I am pretty interested in it, it was one of the neatest things ever. (After the shock of it!!) Is it more common in certain snakes...WC vs CB or younger vs. older ect ect...
