help with my hoggie!!!

AlteredMind99 Sep 26, 2004 12:39 PM

My western hoggie is reluctant to eat lately. When i first got him he was ravenous and would eat up to 5 pinkies at a time. Now I can occasionally get him to take a pinkie, but usually not. He cruises around like he is hungry, but wont touch the pinkies. We have tried the tuna scenting, and also teasing him with the pink. He strikes at us, but not the pink! I have heard that hogs are known for sometimes "going off" eating, but he is still really young so it worries me to have him go without meals. His tank is about 80 degrees right now, should it be warmer? could that be the problem? any suggestions??

I currently have a Western that goes off feed this early in the year as well. You didn't mention how long it has not eaten. I would only be concerned if it were more than 3 or 4 months. Use an accurate scale to keep track of its weight, which is an indicator of possible sickness.

No, he has eaten, just sparingly, he ate one pink about two weeks ago

My friend's hognose did the same thing. He ate fuzzy after fuzzy for awhile then he went off feeding. He tried braining, feeding pinks, putting him in a dark place all to to avail. Finally he captured a toad and scented a fuzzy with it. The hoggie went nuts and then ate another scented. You should try scenting. I am now a believer.
