I have no idea what it might be though.

I don't know many chinese snakes, but the snake that most reminds me of is Azemiops feaie - the Fea's Viper. Something about the head just looks like that species, even though the pattern is different.

If I was dealing with that snake, I would be handling it as venomous until I found out it wasn't.

It sure looks like a Boiga to me. I'm going to guess Boiga guangxiensis or Boiga kraepelini because the other three Chinese Boiga don't look anything like that. Boiga are a genus of venomous rearfanged species, the larger of which can deliver a painful bite. I'd treat it as dangerously venomous until you are positive of the ID. Neat snake.

A friend of mine had one that looked just like this one.

Yeah...I had my doubts too. However it is found in India, Burma, Pakistan and other countries that would suggest an intrusion of the species into China.

Indraneil Das in his book PHOTOGRAPHIC GUIDE TO SNAKES AND OTHER REPTILES OF INDIA does in fact claim southern China as being part of the species range.

But then also, the fact that it was "from" China did not necessarily mean it was collected there.

I really prefer the idea of an undescribed new species of Azemiops!
