Bugs in Superworm container

charky2002 Sep 26, 2004 04:51 PM

I have a container full off superworms and yesterday when I opened the lid there were tons of this little bugs. I found a them in my lizard cages as well but they are not bothering the them at all. I have never had a mite infestation before and i'm not even sure these are mites. They seem a bit to big, and have wings (kinda like miniature fruit flies but not). Has anyone had this problem?? I went through some of the old posts aswell and there was one about grain mites in a superworm colony, could that be the problem?? I'd like to know what i'm dealing with so that I can follow an appropriate course of treatment. Thanks for any help
...Posted in herp help as well but no one responded

could those be the morphed larve, they are in turn beetles who lay the eggs that turn to worms, pupeat(sp) and then turn to beetles to start all over again, I think thats all it is but should be the same size of the worm itself.

Its definitly not a pupae much to tiny and i've seen plenty of those...they just look like little tiny fruit flys

I have them too, they came from the chicken scratch I use as superworm bedding. I also raise fruit flies so I thought some strays took up residence in the bedding and started breeding (but WHAT did the larvae feed on?) but nope, they come from the bedding itself. It won't hurt the colony of superworms at all, they are annoying, don't know what to tell you to do to get rid of them other then to get a few dart frogs and fed them to the frogs . You can try a No-Pest strip on the outside of the container though to catch escapees.

On a side note, I'm starting to get used to tiny little bugs flying and crawling around my house from all the terrariums. Watch out for the walking pepper on your food .
