Buy WC females to attempt breeding

thebigsquease Sep 26, 2004 08:54 PM

How many people buy Wild Caught adult females to attempt to breed them? I see dealers offering up WC females now!! Buy, buy, buy, before they are all sold.
It is my humble opionion that WC females purchased anytime other then spring ( they come in cycled) do not produce in captivity. I would guess it would take up to five years for a WC to cycle in captivity.
Now, with that said, I know in the spring, WC females come in gravid, or if not gravid, at least cycled, and can be used. Then nothing for the next few years.
I would like to hear what others thing of this idea? And if you think it is a waste of time and resoucres buying WC females just to try and use them for breeders.

I picked up three gravids last year and they developed follicles and have been locked up with a male several times so far. I guess time will tell!

Why in the world would someone do this?

Don't you worry about parasites and disease?

No way I'll do this with my valuable males.

FWIW; Amazon Reptile Center does not carry field collected Ball Pythons. Only farmed babies and peoples discarded pets.

They have been quarantined since I took them from a friend of mine and treated numorous times. They have never displayed any symptoms and didnt even have mites or ticks when I recieved them. They were in great shape! If after a year they look, act, eat great, and come back from the vet with a great bill of health I dont see any problem with it at all. Do you think that all these morphs were created from ONLY cb or ch animals? If so then you need to be quarantined and not be allowed to reproduce either. JMO!!!

The original post was about three wild conditioned females cycling for breeding with a captive male. There is no time to 'quarantine' under these circumstances.

FWIW, the various and expensive field collected morphs bred to captive animals is very different than breeding field collected normals to expensive captive animals. At least from where I sit. I'll stick to CB females for my expensive boys.
