Toenail Injury

MissMiniZoo Sep 26, 2004 09:46 PM

My ig was getting a bath and accidently caught his toe in one of the dain holes. He ripped off part of his toenail and it was bleeding quite a bit. It has stopped bleeding as much. He was quite agitated and wouldn't allow me to touch it (I wanted to put a little pressure on it to stop the bleeding)...and I completely understand...it must hurt like heck. He is laying down right now though. Is there anything I need to do?? I just feel really bad that he got hurt. It was a freak accident!
Thanks for your help in advance.

sorry to hear your iggy got hurt. next time something like this happens, if it does, put some styptic powder on the nail. it will stop the bleeding right away. aso make sure you keep the cage as clean as posible while it is healing. wash it with bentidine, to keep it clean. if you dont have styptic powder or bentidine, i would really sugest that you get some. you never know whats gonna happen and it has made life easier on me many times. hope this helps.

Doesn't syptic (sp?) powder sting like crazy? I know cornstarch works equally as well without the burn.

corn starch (powdered) does the same thing the styptic powder does

Thanks everyone for your help! I'm going to get some bentadine (sp?) and corn starch/styptic powder tomorrow.
He seems fine today. It just freaked me out a bit to see his nail bleed so much...although I know it happens. Thanks again...
