Bullsnake Morph Origins/History

jonellopez Sep 27, 2004 01:47 AM

Hey Guys,

With all the morphs that are available with bullsnakes I sometimes loose track of what morph came from where. I know some of the morphs' origin but there's a couple that I'm not sure about. I think that the Pituophis Page should have a section that explains the histories and origins of non-locality and locality color morphs for the Pituophis group. It would really help someone that is new to Pituophis as we have seen in some past and previous posts. Do you guys think it's a good idea? We should share and pitch this idea to KJ for his next update of the pituophis page. If you know any please don't hesitate to share also. Thanks.

That's a great idea. I just saw a pic of a gorgeous white-sided bull with speckles throughout the white - so is this a simple cross between WS and speckles, or something more complicated ?

Del Alspaw did a post asking the same question. There are several responses to it from people like John Cherry, Gary Ballum. KJ (I believe), etc (sorry if I didn't mention a name). that should give you some good starting info. I'll go see if I can find it. Del had asked it while tracing the morph genes that were in his sayi bloodline that he was working with. I believe the hypo gene in his sayi bloodline came from a Colorado sayi. There are several pure sayi morph bloodlines out there. Unfortunately, there may be a mucked up one too. I think a few have the same founding stock, but branched off as different breeders worked with them. For example, it is my understanding that the Trumbower and Bell morph bulls were originally from the same founding bloodline and branched off as Trumbower did his breedings and Bell did theirs. It may be just as important or may be better to find out not just where the gene originated, but when and who introduced it into the different bloodlines when and if in fact it was done. I'm doing this response off the top of my head so the info should be checked. Good luck.
