Eastern Box..........mating..............now???????

lilroach56 Sep 27, 2004 03:31 PM

Is it the eastern box mating season now? Me and my friend found a breeding pair and saw them mating. why is it that they mate in the fall?

Two of mine were mating yesterday...it's not uncommon for them to mate in the fall. please scroll down and check out a recent post covering the same subject matter.

Box turtles pretty much only find each other by sight - not smell or sound, so them finding each other is by chance, for the most part. The females can store sperm for years (some have had fertile eggs laid up to five years after any contact with a male), so with only chance matings, it makes sense to take advantage of any oportunity!

FYI, some males have been known to mount rocks that had the right size and shape!
