Update for Lele and them...

Melisondra Sep 27, 2004 04:03 PM

Well she's not gonna pop yet...
Using that website Lele posted, I found a good rep vet in Ft Wayne (IN) that was not hard to get to at all. Talked with him on the phone today and described all that was going on, and my mom bless her soul took her to see him this afternoon.
As for whats going on...
Apparently she is just literally full of eggs! The probs are though that the eggs dont seem to be calcifying correctly(which confuses me)and seem to be in a large lump. And she was fairly dehydrated. So he gave her a shot of electrolytes and gave mom some pedialite for her, plus a liquid calcium supplement that we are giving to her once a day. And she has been hissing alot at us telling us she is QUITE unhappy about the whole process (Mom said she felt the same way too hehe) but that makes it a bit easier to get liquids in her.
The schedule is that hopefully this should give her what she needs to do this on her own, but should she start turning for the worse or hasn't laid by friday, then she goes into surgery saturday morning (or sooner) to get them out. The vet says he has had much experience with surgey on iguanas and doesnt feel that this should be a problem. Shes a tough little girl too, so I believe she could go through surgery fine.

Im confused on the calcium issue though, we've been dusting her crickets with the usual stuff, and her crickets are gutlaoded as well. I think I need to get a new dust though, I think the stuff I have is a bit old and obviously not really effective. I cant remember the name but I got it a our local petstore.. Herp-vit comes to mind.. (white bottle with a drawn veiled cham on the front)
But just wanted to update on her to those that were helping me and say thanks again for the help and concerns! We appreciate it!
Thanks again!

I'm glad that you found a vet that knows what he/she is doing. I hope this makes you feel better: I bred my panther a year ago and she remained gravid for 1 1/2 - 2 months. She did not eat well during her pregnancy and the eggs did not develop well, and also did not calcify properly. They were stuck in her fallopian tubes (I don't think that's normal) and she had a c-section. I went to visit her all weekend until she could come home, and just to warn you, you will cry!!! (that parts not meant to ake you feel better, just to warn you )Because she was sedated she couldnt' hide her not being well, and she looked like a corpse... that was the worse part. The best part is that the next day she started walking around (she actually burnt her tail in the incubator, the dr could'nt keep her still lol) and she is 100% now. She is a tough cookie, just not meant to have babies I guess. Get her in as good of condition as you can by Sat, so that if she does go under the knife she is as ready as she can be. I know what you mean about the hissing and water... LOL.

Erin, once I got your email with the info about a possible c-section I was going to put you and Lindsay in touch since she had gone thru this last year - a collective sigh when we got her news that she was OK! (I think we were just as worried about Lindsay as we were Orion!)

Lindsay, I am sure you can be a big support for Erin during this time

we'll have to form a "gravid girls" support group!! LOL!!

Lele, you are so great!
I'll make sure to come on here more often (i've been doing well lately!) to check up on things

A few thoughts, yes, the supplement could just be old. Also, how about your UVB light? They need to be replaced often so that is another thing to consider.

When Luna was gravid the vet gave me the liquid calcium supplement and said twice a day. Because of her funny mouth it was easy to get it in her once she tasted it - she liked it!

Hope you don't have any tests this week b/c I do not imagine you are able to focus very well! :/

Yes, I was thinking that the supplement I have is ready to be changed. Its about 1-2 years old. Im looking online now to order some new stuff.
As of now the strip light on her cage is UVB but her basking are just reg. lightbulbs because my fixtures tend to blow out once every 1-2 months (or sooner). They are on a power strip/surge protector but just get fried out or something. So it was cheaper to replace the strip than the basking. I think I might get one for her anyway though to help along. And I was taking her out in the sun this summer alot so that helped a bit.
Called today and mom said shes feeling "MUCH" better. To the point shes moving around alot and Mom opened the cage and she tried to rip a finger off ^_^ what a sweetie. Makes it easier to give the medicine though since she keeps her mouth open at mom the entire time I guess shes feeling alot better though. So im just keeping my fingers crossed that she can do this on her own and no surgery... Which my dad is against since its so expensive :-/ the quote was 300 *ouch* buh bye paycheck.

Ah well we shall see!
No tests this week but mucho studying to do *ugh*

i beleive that eggs can also get too much calcium.. I;ve seen turtle eggs from a c-section that were attached all in a row because they were calcified to eachother. This can also cause egg binding. An xray can show how the eggs are or aren't calcified, then dosage can be worked out from there

Erin,
What school do you go to? I'm at Michigan State, and I know what it's like stressing about school and chameleons at the same time! My little guy just arrived today, so hopefully he will be healthy and happy and I can pay more attention to psychology and palaeontology!

I'm sorry you have to be away from Aurora when she's sick. Sounds like she's gonna be okay though. Hope everything turns out alright.

Im going to Kent State Univ. Its about 3 hours from home so it makes the quick trips home a bit rough. =) Thanks for the concern! It does sound like shes feeling better though so my fingers are crossed!
Thanks!!
