Iguanas and cats?????

Chameleon996 Sep 27, 2004 05:07 PM

I have four cats. Since I have brought Gomez in for the winter neither have seemed to bothered by the others presence. Gomez will go nose to nose with them if they come up to his enclosure then walk away like he could care less. I just started letting Gomez out of his cage for a few minutes at a time and the cats will lay around and watch me feed him grapes. Last week I ventured into the living room with Gomez and locked the cats in my room. He loved it, he walked around a litle then climbed to the top of the couch and sat there for about five minutes before I returned him to his house. Would I ever be able to let them out together? I can't keep locking my cats in my room and he really seemed to enjoy the freedom. He easily weighs more than my cats and I am worried about someone getting hurt.

That's really a big coincidence ! I rescued an iguana too a couple of weeks ago and guess what, i name it Gomez too, lol. (i think i have already write that on the forum...)

About the cats, i would let them meet each other with careful supervision. My iguana dont free roam yet but a friend of mine have 2 cats and an iguana and they live together peacefully . In fact the cats dont come closer than 3 feet of the igg (seem to be no more than tail range, lol). i really think that you should let them meet in case that your iguana escape someday and that you wont be there to check them out.

Cats and Iguanas can coexist quite well together depending on the particular animals. Close supervision is advised for quite some time before trusting them together alone. We have 3 cats here that all get along with the lizards and the lizards are accustomed to the cats being around and close. Same with our 2 dogs. I would never trust a cat around a lizard that is small tho.

My iggys get along great with my cats. My cuban goes right towards my cats to make them move out of his way when he is roaming around, but he's just trying to show them that he is the boss. I'd always keep an eye on them out together just to be safe, but I haven't had any real problems with them getting in fights or anything. My small cat will stalk my 2 smaller greens iggys(Sam-N-Ella), but never attacks them. And my big green ig Boris doesn't even care that the cats are following him around. My older cat had some territorial issues with Chaos(cuban)when they both wanted the couch by the window, but they got over it and just layed down next to each other. I watched them real close when they were right together, just because you never know. I would slowly introduce them and see how it goes. The cats would probably be a little hesitant to go after your iggy if it's bigger then they are. I don't know if I'd let all 4 cats gather around your iggy at the same time because the iggy might feel really threatened and may get aggressive.
