Triad Sep 27, 2004 05:19 PM

Ok I just took some pics of my mali and my brothers mali's undersides in hopes that you all would be able to help me sex them.

Here's Apollo:

Ares:

I hope these aren't too dark for you all.

Thanks for any help!

Well the pictures are very dark. Can't really see the hind quarters to see the femenal pores. Try again with light... maybe outside.

I have a picture modification program which allows me to adjust colour, contrast, and sharpness on images. I can artifically lighten these pics. Can I email them back to you?

Your malis are young aren't they? I thought they were a year or so? They may be too young to tell easily... Just a thought.

They should be about 2 years old I think.

My brother and I got them in November 2002. They were a lot smaller then, probably about 5-6 inches. Now both are at least 10 inches I believe, I haven't measured them in awhile. I was told they were juvies when we got them.

We do everything right except they're still in the same enclosure. I'm moving Ares to a diff one in about 2 weeks. I'm working on getting the inside ready right now.

Well they both have the femoral(is that the right term) pores and it sort of looks like they have balls.......

This leads me to believe that me and my brother have males.

I'll wait for awhile longer. Then get better pics when they fully grow. That way I know for sure they've definetley developed sexually.

Thanks for your help anyways.

Good idea to get better pictures or th femoral pores. As for the "balls" uro's as well as other reptiles do not have external genitals. Everything is inside so what you think you see is not it.

So the bumps under his pores are not balls? I mean they are round so I just figured....you know.

Well I'll get better pics today. It's getting colder out everyday now. IL has the strangest weather known to man. Heck up until yesterday we were still in the 80-90 range. Now it's like 70's and windchill of like 50 so it's too cold for me to take the animals out.

But I can get good pics if they are still asleep. If they are up and energized, then there's no holding them still. That's what happened last time.

I'll try to get better ones by the end of this week.

Thanks

The femeral pores run along the inside of the legs. If they are young or femaale the pores look like little dots but the mature male's looks like bigger white dots with sometimes and waxy plug type thing coming out. It is realy hard to explain. Take the pictures of the leg area with the pores showing. Good luck. I wish some cooler weather would come to Miami Florida

See I think the Hurricane's took the weather you guys were supposed to be getting in Florida and blew the hot weather front up to IL. See IL gets weather from MN and MN gets it from Canada. Canada and MN both had cold spells when IL was in the 90's so I think we did get Florida's weather.

Both mali's have big pores and they are colored like a semi-dark yellowish color, sort of like * i hate to use this as a reference but oh well* ear wax you pick out of your ear......

I think they are both guys but I'd like to know cause if they are then I'll get 2 females one for each and that'll be my brothers Xmas gift....

I'm in Il =). Anyway, I'm no expert on sexing and you may have already heard this advice but here it goes: It is said that females femoral pores are larger in the center and smaller on the legs. I have also seen in pictures that males at a top view of their back have a football shape and females have more of a bell shape. Another indicator is that males as they mature show a much more blunt round head where the females have a more defined head that is a little more pointed towards the nose. I have been better able to tell by body shape than by pores. I have one mali that is mostly yellow and creme and has the waxy plug pores but definitely has the female shaped body and head and show absolutely no aggression. I have another female that's half her size (even full grown) and is almost completely black/brown but also has a very femenine head and body. I have tried to sex them for a long time but got enough confusing indicators that I gave up! Since I never intend to breed them, it's of little concern to me anyway. I hope you have better luck =)

Triad Sep 29, 2004 10:04 PM

>>I'm in Il

What part of IL, like up by chicago or towards St Louis?

I'm in the Peoria Area aka Central IL lol

I think they both have a football shape, I've never tried to "shape" their body before. They both get the football shape when eating though.

I don't know. I'd like to know because then I can get them a mate. I don't want to breed my mali but I do intend on breeding my saharan uromastyx because they are some of the cutest things ever. And they'll make great birthday/anniversary gifts for my 2 brothers and my parents. I know my mom loves Ares, Apollo, Iris and Orion and she especially loves it when they cuddle on her chest and fall asleep like we used to do when we were babies.

I'll try and get some better pics this weekend since I'm going to go shopping tomorrow and won't have time to do so.

Thanks for all of your help everybody!

I'm in central IL too. Peoria/Blm-Normal area. If you're near Peoria, you should go to Washington Pet shoppe. The guy there is named Dave and he's one of the best when it comes to herp advice and keeps a great stock of herp supplies! I moved so it's a 45 min trip for me now but I always took my uros there and stocked up on their supplies while he helped me answer my questions. He used to be pretty active in this forum too but I forgot his sign on =). If you do some online research on uro sexing you will find better pictures of the football shape and head shape. You'll see that the females heads really are more refine than the males. Good luck!

I'll research more later tonight. So the petstore is in Washington,IL? That's only like a 30-40 minute drive from my town so if I feel up to it tomorrow I'll go check it out.

I think this is funny: I buy flukers red pellets for bearded dragons right, and I'll give them to my dragon upstairs and then to my brothers downstairs. The mali's go over and try to get to Draco's cage to get the pellets. So I put some on a little dish and put it in their cage and they go nuts! They love those pellets. I think it's funny cause they are for bearded dragons, but dragons and mali's eat the exact same things (except the dragons don't eat bird seeds, that's the only difference). For awhile Fluker's had stopped making these pellets but now they are back and making them again after demand I guess so tonight I'm going into Petsmart which is the only place that carries them to go get 2 more containers of them.

Yeah I'll probably check the guy out this weekend, do you know the name of the petstore still or no? It'll be fine just as long as I have a semi-clear idea on where I am going to be going.

The name of the shop is Washington Pet Shoppe in the cherry tree shopping center in Washington. You can call there first if you want to see if they have the pellets or other supplies. They're really helpful there. Dave is there a lot on Saturday mornings so that's usually a good time to catch him. My girls love crunchy food and go nuts over their bird pellets! They are so spoiled now that they really don't eat greens but the pellets are fortified and my girls are both fat and healthy so they work out great for both of us! Best of luck!

Thanks for the help.

Yeah Ares and Apollo will eat anything normally but only if I hand feed them. Sometimes that is the only way they'll eat some of their lettuce.
