Gecko genetic question

tim5580 Sep 27, 2004 08:02 PM

What happens if you breed a blizzard (all white) and a hypermelanistic (real dark brown/black) leopard gecko? Do you get 50% blizzard 50% hyper mix, some new kind of looking ones, gray/tan babies, or do the 2 cancel each other out and you get regular looking ones? Or do you get something else?

I'm not sure. The biggest problem with breeding is its impossible to tell by looking at an animal if it is Heterozygous or Homozygous, and that makes all the difference with simple recessive traits. The only way to tell is to breed them out and then tell by the offspring

You'd get 100 het blizzard (since it is recessive), and they should all look anywhere from normal to hyper. The only thing that would through this off would be if the hyper gecko was actually already het for blizzard.
