I read a brief post in which the author stated that a leopard gecko could have been affected by over supplementation. Is this an issue with reptiles? If so, what are the effects?

Yes it can be a problem, and harmful to some lizards.
I don't have all the facts here, but I know over supplimenting chameleons can be a harmful as NOT supplimenting.

Also here is a brief paragraph from an iguana site :

Over-supplementation can also be a problem. Too much vitamin A can cause sloughing of skin and erythema (redness) of the underlying dermis (skin). Over-supplementing of vitamin D and calcium can cause calcium deposits in soft tissues.

So you should always know the proper amounts for the lizard you are caring for! Hope it helped a little,
