Common Boa Burmese python, Travel and storage

Slizarus Sep 28, 2004 12:36 AM

I'm attending a Herp Exhibit in Hollywood, and I'm looking to bring our 2 largest snakes, a 9-10' Burmese, and a 8' Common Boa
Problem is, though we'll have a place to keep them during the exhibit.. I need to keep them in a container during Transport to Hollywood, and storage during the night.. Anyone know if the two could stomach each other long enough in a single tub?
Or might there be aggression issues?
(I know both are calm species, but pythons are far more active, and I'm worried he could turn aggressive)

Both are as "tame" as snakes could be, but I'm troubled they may agitate each other.. any comments? anyone ever had troubles with Burms being transported with other snakes loose instead of restrained in a bag?

Any info would be much appreciated, if it can't work.. I'd need time to figure out how to load so many herps in so little space of the care..

I wouldn't put them together. I know I had to house a juvenile boa with our three juvenile burms for a night and the next day was the only time it ever bit anyone. If I had to make that trip I would use sterilite boxes and burn some holes in the side by heating an unbent coathanger and pushing it through. You can also put all of your smaller snakes in smaller sterilites and then put all of the little sterilites in one big one (all with airholes of course). Then at the most you migh have three bigger sterilites to put in your car. And if your seats fold down so you can access the trunk from the inside of the car that shouldn't be a problem. Good luck.

Hm, so the boa bit the burm? That's not something I'd have expected, I'd expect all the aggression from our burm..
It's something to think about, hopefully I'll get more opinions and see if that might be a common occurence.
We've got plenty of Boxes with holes in them hehe.. too many

Hello--

Putting them in the same box will be stressful to both, added to the stress of being away from the familiar; new smells, sensations, etc.. Also, I don't so much worry about aggression between two big snakes stored together as I do suffocation. As weird as it sounds, I know someone who was transporting two large burms in a sterilite-type container, and one got on top of the other and suffocated the one on the bottom--or at least that is what was surmised about the situation. My opinion: let them each have their own container. Good luck getting to and from this expo.

Interestingly, that was another worry of mine, The common is a good 50 lbs with the Burm weighing near double.. Hm.
It seems the common just went into blue eye anyways and probably won't shed by the time we're ready this weekend.
We're pairing up with a woman who breeds Red Tegu and about 99 other Herp species Hopefully I can get aquainted with some of the herps, should be fun.

Thanks everyone, it should be awesome, I've only met a few people from other chapters, and hopefully a number of people will come, It'll be a blast

If they're actually those weights, then no, I would not put them together. Even if they aren't, they should be transported separately. The trip alone will be enough to stress them without forcing them into cramped conditions with an unknown, and likely unwanted, cage mate.
