my lights have arrived, have questions.

overhaul Sep 28, 2004 08:18 AM

I received my lights for kosh today. I had ordered a 100 watt powersun since the 100 watt household bulb I'd been using was already a bit too hot. I figured the powersun would be hotter or at the least produce the same amount of heat as the household bulb. turns out it is cooler! So where the household bulb was in the 130's F at the highest point of his perch, this one is 108F. Kosh has been basking under the new light now for a couple hours. He seems to like it and the tempgun read the top of his head at 101F which is where he seems to prefer it. but the tip of his nose is about 8 inches from the bulb. the rest of his body farther away since he's sitting at an incline.. Is this too close? I really wish I don't have to exchange it for a stronger one. So I'm hoping you all say it sounds OK.

The flourescent ended up being the wrong size. The fixture accomodates two 24" instead of one 48" like I thought. so I took my doublebright reflector off my aquarium and put it on his tank. Since this one can hold two 48" I put a second light in to hopefully make up for the decreased heat from the spot (regular philips and a bit yello) and to make his surroundings brighter. But still, the lowest temp in his cool side is 78 F, not in the 80's. Is this still too cool?

the 10" dome light I recieved was damaged. Looked like someone had stepped on it or something cuz the ceramic part was sunken in one side but I hammered it straight (didn't want to have to return and wait longer for a new one) so this is my first experience w/ bigappleherp :/

ah, another thing. I have an old power-glo flourescent. is this ok to put in as his second light? that one is a whiter light and not so yellow. also, I have old GE bulb that is pinkish, and a couple old actinic ones from when I had salt water tank. Could any of those be OK to use for my dragon in conjunction with the 5.0? Thanks!

your temps are good. 8" from the 100W powersun is ok, but no closer. larger MVB require a minimum distance of 12" - 36" but the 100W flood is ok from 6".

You have now met the UV and heat requirements, so any extra lights you throw in are for brightening purposes only, and they like it bright so go for it with the other bulbs.

nice setup.

thank you Ross, I really needed to get a second opinion on it and an OK, before keeping the setup this way. I want to replace the second flourescent with a whiter light. nothing I have is as white as the reptisun 5.0... but I'll go on a hunt for one.
