help on wild caught

crom Sep 28, 2004 08:36 AM

A friend has an baby eastern ( very tiny ) that his friend found in his back yard. He wants to get rid of it and my first choice would be to release it but they are so rare here (I've never seen one in 40 years of looking for snakes )that if I can't put it back in the place it was found, it would probably not make it and most likely it would never find a mate if it did survive. 2nd choice is keep it but my question is there any danger of parasites to my collection even though it would have its own tank? I'm open to any and all suggestions and would sure appreciate some help.

In another room till your sure its free of parasites. When I bought my python last year I just put it in my room with my other snakes. Come to find out she had mites. So I removed her entire cage to another room till I was sure she was free of mites. So far I've never seen anymore since. Just my opinion.

I forgot to mention I quarantined my python in another room till she shed..like 6 weeks to make sure she was free of mites. I don't know about internal parasites. Maybe have it vet checked.

Thanks for the reply, I sure appreciate it. If I could trouble you for one last time. Do you think there is any internal parasites that could somehow transfer if its kept in a seperate cage but in close proximity to my other snake cages? I don't know if there is a vet around here that will look at a snake unless they just check fecal material the same as a dog.

I would think the other snakes would have to come into contact with the fecal matter to transfer internal parasites. Best to handle and clean the new baby after dealing with your others first.
I'm no expert but those are my thoughts. I have been handling my CB new gopher last and he seem ok. Wild caught snakes on the other hand could be carring anything. Honestly I would keep it as far away as possible till all is safe with him. I would just see how it does the first month or so then if it seem to have a parasite then try to find a vet. Hope this helps
