A couple questons

rellim Sep 28, 2004 08:49 AM

I recently purchased my first snake but have always loved snakes. The pet store (probaly not the best place to get a snake) I got him from said he was a Central American Boa Constrictor and was about a year old. Through my research online I have yet to see a Boa Constrictor sub-species refered to as "Central American". Anybody know what the deal is there? He looks very healthy and is about 20" long. Is that about right for a year old Boa? I also have had some difficulty getting the humidity in the tank to be high enough. It stays right around 50 right now and I spray it with water once a day. Any tips on keeping the humidity right? Thanx in advance for any answers.

Its prolly a Nic as they are often sold as Centrals thru Pet stores and import dealers because of their Import origin etc,
As for the humidity 50% is fine for any boa thats not in a blue cycle for shedding. The reason people have issues with RI is because they keep the levels up above 50% constantly and theres no need.I regularly keep mine at a steady 45-48% with temps on a 85-78* gradient and they do very well. Of coarse I bump the humidity up to 60%max when I first notice their belly getting milky and starting their blue cycle, after they shed out its dropped back to 45%.Rising ambeint humidity rarely gets to over 55%.I maintain a room temp of 80-85* without central heat and air in the snake room.
If you have the snake in a tank type cage with a screen top its best to use duct tape to seal off the screen to help retain constant temp/humid levels. Leaving about 1 inch across the back for ventilation. The use of good quality duct tape helps alot, once the top is taped a hair dryer will set the glue in on the screen portion, just heat it up and rub it down and ITS STUCK LIKE CHUCK !
