Cash for Reptile Shows.... What is the additional buying power if any????

neilgolli Sep 28, 2004 09:05 AM

I'll be at the tampa reptile show this weekend with a budget of around $6K and looking for some balls.

My question is two part, first is cash king? Will I get a substantionaly better deal bringing cash to bargin with than plastic and if so how much?

2nd, a common question what line of morphs would you look at with that $6K budget. I'm thinking a male and female albino and a pair of 100% het piebalds. Love the thoughts and comments.... Thanks

I would probably go for a male spider, they are in that price range now, and are co-dom. This is also a good year for pied's. In my opinion I would go for the Spider and try to get a Pasel Female next. I put a pic of my pied up just to confuse you mor LOL.

Look around once, then go back to the tables you saw stuff you wanted and were reputable and start making offers. Be honest, let them know your budget and what you're looking for. I bet at the end of the day you'll find someone who will be happy to give you a deal and be happy with what they got as well.

Most of all, I'd say buy what YOU are really interested in. If your dream is to prouce albino pieds, than go for those albinos and het pieds. Good luck.

I can't speak to reptiles shows but at computer shows and even a lot of stores I have negotiated a deal with someone while allowing them to see that I had a credit card in my hand. When there was no more give in the deal and I had gotten what I wanted I then produced a wad of cash and asked "OK now how much if we make this a cash transaction?" Without fail I have gotten a lower price from 5 to 20 % depending on what I was buying. Sometimes if its cash it doesn't go on the books. X piece of hardware was defective, X animal died. Seller's wallet is fatter.
Just my experience.

So, are you letting people here on this PUBLIC forum know that you will be at a reptile show this weekend with 6 grand CASH in your pocket? Sure, I can make you a honey of a deal... meet me out back of the building by the dumpsters and come alone. You'll be able to recognize me, I'll be the one wearing the ski mask and carrying a blackjack...

Seriously though... Do people really carry this much cash with them when going to a reptile show? Is the risk really worth shaving a few bucks off of a deal?

If you have a budget of $6K and you tell the seller that, guess how much the snakes are gonna cost. Uh.........$6K?.....that's right. Never tell the seller how much money you have or what your budget is. You'll end up spending every dollar you have. Negotiate the price, have a set limit that you'll spend, and negotiate more. (It's like if you went into a car dealership and told the salesperson you got $25K to spend on a car. He's going to try and get as much of that as he can.) If you lay your cards on the table for everyone to see, then you have no negotiating power. Don't ever tell them how much you are willing to pay up front. That will become evident during the negotiation. If the seller wants the business, he/she will meet you somewhere in the middle.

basically three ways to pay for purchases.. cash, checks and credit card, and money orders.
the mian reason to use cash is because its simpler.. its done right then and there.. most cash transactions have no real papert trail except for a receipt.. Checks area possibility..but you really have to know the person..majority if not all vendors do not take checks at reptile shows. credit cards are convenient to use and you don't have to carry around that wad of cash.. . there are fees involved.. almost always the difference in price is due to that fact.. the dealers will pass the processing fees right on to you (usually 3% is what most CC companies charge..) Every vendor and store that accepts credit cards pays these fees.. regardless how obvious they are are up to the individual businesses. the last method is money orders, these are impractical as they have to be printed up before hand..

like i said the main reason you see a diffence in cash and cc price are the fees.. many of the computer shows i go to you can readily see it.. i don't remeber seeing too much at reptile shows..
