L@@king to Start up a GTP colony... Any great deals out there??

MG Sep 28, 2004 03:38 PM

I've been out of herps for over 4 years now, and I'm looking to jump into it once again. I've chosen GTPs as the one for me. I used to be a huge Boa Constrictor collector with over 100 with many localities. I got out of it, due to career change. I have a few questions for those of you who have dealt with this gorgeous species.. How difficult are they to maintain? How difficult are they to breed? I had no success with Eneralds as the area I live in has a very high level of pollenation, so I had to get rid of them. I did successfully maintain and even bred Madagascar Tree Boas. I didn't have a problem breeding my BCI's and BCC's. Last but not least, is there anyone out there that has some cb babies that are priced reasonably. Many of the breeders out there are very proud of theirs. I don't want to pay a low price for WC imports, because they are usually nothing but problems.. I helped out many breeders out there when I got rid of my boa collection, and now that I'm looking to get back into things, I can't even get a pair of baby albino burms off of them. How about that... If anyone knows of anyone out there that has some good stock reasonably priced, please email me at egpits@yahoo.com thanks, Milo Garcia

Chondros arent difficult to keep at all just more sensitive mistakes, and have specific needs. First things first, read "The Complete Chondro" before you buy a chondro because its the best book for their care. Secondly, Rico Walder of Signal Herp usually has quality animals for cheaper prices.

I would get a chondro from any breeders on chondroweb.com Theres tons to pick from and if you are looking to get a Biak Rico has the best ones in my opinon! I will be getting another Biak from Rico Walder ( www.signalherp.com) at the NARBC in chicago. Thomas Phillips still has some of his Arus and If I where you I would pick up one of thoughs .. you wont regret it! Posted below is the Aru I picked out.. these steamers are developing blue all over and fast!

It's going to take awhile for you too build your collection. Start off with CBB neo or yearling, stay off kingsnake... bad place for chondros (if youre just getting in to it). Try out www.Chondroweb.com post on the forum, ask lots of questions.

PS. Ricos Website is www.signalherp.com he's also on chondroweb.

Julian, thanks for the info. No I'm not just starting out and I hear you about dealings with some of the people on Kingsnake. I had several dealings with people there several years ago, and I'd like to say most of them went well, but I did deal with a couple who were just plain scum.. The majority of the names I see on there now are all new to me. I've been on Chondro.web, very nice stuff, just very pricy. I'm a school teacher, so I don't make lots of money. I was in and around enough reputable people to know what some things are worth, and to be honest with you, what some breeders ask for their stock is plain ridiculous. Most consider this a hobby, but considering what they're asking, i'd say they are looking to get rich!! Just my two cents!! thanks again.. Milo Garcia

Hi,

I have a bunch of babies available right now. You can see them pictured at my web-site (link below).

The prices arent ridiculous. You get what you pay for. Go buy an import for $200 and see what happens. There are plenty of people out there for quality animals for reasonable prices. Including Rico and Marcial.

I don't think I ever gave my definition of a "ridiculous Price". In my opinion, I think that people asking $700 - $1,000 dollars for unsexed babies is "ridiculous". I know "you get what you pay for". Hell half of the importers out there are bringing in babies for $125 a piece and a turning around and selling them off at $350 .. If you read my first post, I did mention that i wasn't looking for imports and all the problems that come along with them. I just know and have already spoken to reputable breeders out there that have young adults that are reasonably priced and even cheaper than what some are asking for in their unsexed babies.. Like I said, its a matter of opinion, and if you're not open minded to some of these posts, then simply don't reply. What may be ridiculous to me, may be simply affordable to you, vise versa.. You know what I mean. I didn't mean to step on anyones toes, as I made sure that I didn't even mention names.. Sorry.. Milo

I would definitely argue that its not ridiculous to pay 700 to 1000 for an unsexed hatchling. Heck I've paid 4k for one, and it was worth every penny and much more now. He is getting ready to be bred to an equally phenomenal female, both 95% or so high yellow. If you just want to breed normal locality types then yeah, 700 to 1000 may be a little high, but if you're looking for some of the rarer phenotypes then be prepared to pay a premium. I assure you its worth it.
