I identified them for the importer as Zaocys dhumnades. They get about 7' long but are slender and basically keep their juvenile color and pattern. They are racer-like and often somewhat nippy. You might think of them sort of as the Spilotes of Asia.
I am also very interested in these rats. Are they common in the states? How much do they usually go for? Should I keep it like any other basic Asian rat?
local retail store had them for 49.00.......Chris
Hi Chris,
I'm just curious as to where you live and what store you saw them in. Basically was it a national chain or localy owned store? I might be able to figure out who the primary importer is/was.
Did the snakes look like this? Photo from ad in kingsnake classifieds.
Thanks.

Last week their ad seemed to suggest they only had one. This week they say they have a pair "left", suggesting they've already sold some. At least that's how I read it.
Do you know if they have received several of these recently or what?
I'd be interested in them but I'd want more than a pair.

If it's the ad I saw that said he "loved" the snake, just wished he knew a common name. The ad also said it was captive bred and had come in with a Chinese shipment. MY OPINION here, nothing more, but it's hard to believe that with something you receive as captive bred you aren't given an id on. Add to that anything of Chinese origin being CB? Not impossible, but.... While I don't doubt Ophidiophile's identification of the snake at all, at first glance I thought the head looked alot like juvenile Boiga. Wouldn't a responsible seller make sure what species he had, so that proper husbandry could be given? And so that proper advice could be given to potential buyers?
The point I'm laboring away at is that I don't think someone who sells snakes without knowing their species should be supported. If the animal was just being offered to advanced hobbyists (or whatever term you'd like to use) it would be a different situation. But to put it up on the classifieds without a true identification is a disservice to the animal, to the buyer, and to the hobby.
I invite comments on my opinion here.
