i was wondering how many leo's i could fit in a 48x12x20 tank thanks

Im guessing it is about a 30 gallon or so tank? Good rule is 10 gallons per leo maximum. So I am gonna say 3 max, but no more than one boy because they will fight even if no pretty girl leos are present to impress.

actaully its a 55 gallon but its quite high

Hmmm..height isn't really a neccesity so that doesn't really help with how many leos you can house in that tank. I would say 3 to 4 leos. Again make sure they are all females or if you HAVE to put a male make sure only one. Males present in the tank with females really stresses the female. (unless they are babies and not yet sexually mature) Hope this helps!
