Road cruising for corns . . . . yields an awesome find. . .

BlueKing Sep 28, 2004 07:00 PM

Hi there everyone! I am mainly a Kingsnake guy, but I do have some cornsnakes as well. I decided to check around the area where I live, here in NC, and had quite an impressive evening. I found a large copperhead and three cornsnakes - all within 30 minutes! The cornsnakes were: One 3 foot very red male, a 4.5 foot red with brown background male, and a very unusual yellow 3.5 foot female corn! I have found many cornsnakes in my life in TX, NC, FL, GA, SC, LA, MS, and AL. But I have NEVER found a yellow one. This one has no red pigment whatsoever and has yellow body blotches and even brighter yellow blotches on its' sides. The ground color is a pale gray that fades to a darker gray on the posterior of the animal. The blotches are bordered by thick black kind of like an okeetee. How rare are these yellow corns in the wild? Based on my observations . . . well this is my first one. I know others have been found in the wild before, but I was just curious. I will be breeding her next spring to a nice red one.
Thank you for any input you may have,

Zee

The snake sounds alot like a caramel.
Not too long ago Ben Siegel Reptiles was offering a WC caramel for sale. The snake was caught somewheres in Florida I believe. From pics you could see it was a dead match to captive caramel stock.

Rich Zewkowski's original caramel female was also wild caught. If the gene can pop up twice in wild populations (or in a species as a whole) then it can certainly pop up a third time.

Congrats on your find. Fingers crossed it IS a caramel or possibly a new gene you have.

DO post pics!! Thanks.

Sorry for my late response! My computer took a nasty nosedive (of the virus type) - But she's all fixed now(I hope). I will post some pics of her in a few days. She just turned blue yesterday, so she's a little dull looking for a few days. Thanks for the information,

Zee
