IS SNAKE DYING?

anarchist Sep 28, 2004 07:12 PM

Is there any way of telling a snake is starting to hibernate, because my brown snake will be found curling up in a ball and i can flip it over and evuantually it will get moving but it takes a while? is it beginning to hibernate or is it dying?

Well.. um, that's quite a question.. I hope not.. how often are you feeding it? What conditions is it in? Heat? Lighting? I know zip about brown snakes.. but I believe we can discern a problem if there is one soon enough.. Anyone know when they enter Brumation?
If they do?

The Cage Stays around 72-77 degrees everyday i put food in there but they will only have a little piece of slug and no more.

Well, the temps are right.. from what I gather, it's a native snake.. burrows often.. secretive sucker...
Erm, where do you get the slugs? With the use of poison so wide spread, it's possible the slugs could be dangerous.. perhaps try some earthworms, from a bait shop perhaps?

Biggest concern is to get them to eat regularly.. feed every couple days..
It may enter brumation considering it's nature.. I haven't seen info on it honestly.. if it starts to really slow down in mid october, november.. turn down the temps.. stop feeding.. keep everything else regular.. and see what happens.. if it's healthy, it should do alright.. otherwise, eh.

Anyone else know something about browns? I've no experience with them.

If the snake is a wild caught specimen, it is most likely going into brumation.
You may wish to consider dropping the temperature a bit, to brumate, unless the specimen is underweight and has not shown an active eating response during periods of warmer weather.
Keep in mind to maintain a clean source of water within the enclosure during brumation.

Good luck,

Jeff
