cage question

bmelv24 Sep 28, 2004 09:30 PM

I was hoping someone could help me. I recieved a baby panther chameleon last week and everything is fine with him he eats and drinks and is starting to show some color. My problem is the bottom of his cage filling up with water. I have an all screen with a solid bottom cage , a ficus tree and hibiscus for plants, a mister and dripper that drip into the plants. Should I cut a hole in the bottom and put a tub under to catch the excess water? I changed the towling tonight becasue there was standing water in it, but I don't want to have to lift the plants out every couple of days(too much stress for the cham) Any suggestions?

I used a hole saw and cut a hole in the bottom, I then glued some screening over the hole with silicon. I have a funnel under the cage (cage is on a rack) that goes into a 5 gallon bucket. This works well for me.

do you have it dripping onto one of the plants? the soil and evoperated water on the leaves usually leaves the bottom dry. but i do have some big plants and pots.

The hole is in the pvc bottom of the cage. I mist twice daily, a shower weekly, and I have a misting machine that comes on around noon when I am at work. I dont use a dripper but use to. My veiled never used the dripper and it was a pain to fill/clean each day so I dont use it anymore.

What kind of mister are you running? How old is your baby? A dripper and a mister may be a little too much for a baby panther. If you have a good mister that allows you to mist in durations of 1 minute or less, I would go ahead and take out the dripper. This should minimize the amount of water collecting at the bottom. Also, set the timer on the mister to go off only when the water from the previous mist has completely dried out. Standing water in the bottom of the cage is no good for a baby chameleon.

I have a Zoomed Habbamist and yes there are different settings (sanywhere from 15 sec to 60sec). I have a little dripper on the top that is a pain and if that is too much water, i wouldn't be to upset about removing the dripper until he gets bigger. Right now, he is about 3.5 months old
