I tried two types of roaches, lobsters and orange heads. I personaly like the orange heads best. as long as you keep them real warm they will breed like crazy. Orange heads dont climb glass or plastic so there is no need for messy vasoline to keep them in their container.
Mine are in some sort of wood chips inside a large rubbermaid, I feed them kitten food and leftover fruits and veggies. I also mist them down when I mist my chameleons.

I breed hissers, and have no problems doing it. I would recommend that you start with about a dozen (of any species). From there just set them up in some sort of container and keep them warm, like around 80-85 maybe even a little warmer. Just feed and water and watch as the colony grows.
It starts off slow at 1st but once they get going you'll have lots of roaches running around. I started with 3 and that was a no go, so then I bought two dozen, and now after about 1 1/2 years I have around 300! That doesn't count all the ones I feed out to my chameleons either.
Big bonus with roaches is they don't smell bad like crickets, which is why I don't breed crickets, I just buy em.
