Sorry for this stupid question, but .....

Intempesta_Nox Sep 29, 2004 01:56 AM

I was wondering what others opinions are on the different bedding for mice/rat colonies. This has probably been answered before, I'm sorry, but I'd like an overview on the best/cheapest bedding. I'd appreciate any help.

Aspen bedding

Use the search tab and you will find that many of us use many different things. Pine shavings, aspen shavings, recycled newsprint products, alfalfa pellets, even newspaper. We all have our reasons.

Demark has a good idea about hunting around for different opinions. I've always used pine shavings for my mice and aspen for my snakes. I have double tubs for my mice and will put the pine in several days before cleaning day so it can air/dry out a bit. Sometimes it's more dusty than I like but not nearly as bad as the aspen I've been getting. To help reduce mouse odor mix one teaspoon of IMATATION vanilla extract in a gallon of water for your critters. It really helps.

Good luck

Newspaper works well because you can line the cages and then rip some strips for them to make a nest, or a bed, then when it is cleaning time, roll it up and then dump the left over stuff. It works well. And if you already get the paper it is really cheap. And also it is good to recycle I also put some aspen or pine in for any of the pregnant females, so they can make a good nest for the babies. Good luck!
