Can you breed Bull snakes w/ Gophers?

usaforanarchy Sep 29, 2004 09:53 AM

I am kind of a newbie when it comes to breeding Pine/Bull/Gopher snakes. I notice the similarity in looks and also the scientific names. Is it easy to breed bull snakes with gopher snakes? Or would it be best to find a gopher snake? The only reason I ask is because I see a lot more bull snakes on the market than gophers, right now I'm only looking for a breedable male(albino or het for it) gopher snake. Any help would be awesome.

Thanks,
Justin

Well this is going to be a little biased but here is my thought on it.

While it is possible and relativly easy I would not recommend breeding a bull and gopher together let alone even a different subspeicies of gopher such as Sonoran Gophers (p. m. affinis) and Baja Gophers. I would keep your blood line true to the subspeicies. This is due to the lack of true Pitupous due to hybridation. Just think if you don't hybridize then you will have probably a slightly uncommon subspeicies and you will be able to sell them for more than hybrids. Also it is pretty easy to find adult albino hets or true albinos.
