Perlite question

momtowildones Sep 29, 2004 11:26 AM

I have a couple of gravid geckos and this is my first time with this whole process with leopard geckos. I want to use perlite to incubate the eggs and for the lay boxes because I got them from another breeder and this is what they are used to. Can I just use the perlite available at Home Depot and other garden centers or do I need a special kind? Thanks for your help!

Yes, you can just get the kind at Home Depot. Good Luck!

Use the perlite for incubation but not for the laybox. Perlite is a volcanic glass, so if ingested it can cause serious internal damage. Leos use their tongue as a way to sense their environment, so you can bet your leo may inadvertently swallow the substrate.

For the laybox, peat moss is a safer alternative. It's also easier for your gravid females to use for digging and burying. Keep it moist just like a humid hide, and your eggs will be safe.

You can buy both the peat moss and perlite at Home Depot for $3 a bag.
