Anyone bred grasshoppers?

CollardGuy Sep 29, 2004 03:38 PM

I am going to turn a little outdoor room (8' by 8') into a warm spot for my crickets and I am also going to try to breed some grasshoppers I call "Elves," (I name all my local grasshoppers.) in a screen enclosure. These are some sort of slantface grasshopper with small black/white males and large green females.

Funny when I was a kid they were everywhere. But over the years around here, in yards there are an occasional one.

I found one last week, and put in infront of my adult male C.vestigium and it went to hop, and was GONE that fast!

They really love them and I cant find any! If there is a place to purchase it would be great.

They are everywhere here, and yes, mine love them too, also my chameleon loves them. The abundance of them makes it possible to breed them if I can get a successful system, and they make great feeder items to keep herps from getting food-bored.

around the country due to them being a crop pest. I think it is a federal deal.

LOL...I'm surprised it's legal to ship any insects for that very reason. I have a nice population of the European crickets in my lizard pen now. I need to put the leopard geckos out there some evening if it warms up again.

Are they very different from House crickets?

I was hoping you'd ask that LOL...They are the light brown cricket you see in most pet shops, as opposed to those large black crickets with jaws-like mandibles. Softer shelled, and easier to digest for the lizards (so I'm told).

Those sound good. No sharp mandables to bite with, softer shells, I'll take five dozen.

Where did you get them from? (Or did they not come from cyberspace)

I import them, or I fly out there 12 times a year :P Nearly every petshop I've ever been too have carried them Scott. They call them "crickets." They must have special laws regarding racial profiling, so they don't refer to their country of orgin. It is the only kind of crickets I've ever got when I order anywhere online.

I normall use reptilefood.com.

The House Cricket? The plain old normal everybody hates them but everybody has them House Crickets huh? I read they were from Asia, but it makes sense that hundreds of years ago they spread like a plague across Europe like they have in North America, and became known as European?. Or are you refering to another species? I know these are everywhere, know I know why everybody likes them better than Field Crickets. Big Black American Field Crickets. Bad Memories. Very bad. Thats interesting though how similar A. domesticus is to the Field Cricket, and they're from Asia.
