Shedding...

CJBianco Sep 29, 2004 05:18 PM

Can anyone tell me if my little Ball Pythons need anything in their Sterilites to help them shed? In my aquarium, I used to keep lots of "rough" stuff to help them shed -- Repti-Bark, large gritty rock, hollow bark log hide... But now that I've followed (more or less) the examples posted here, I'm concerned that they may not have anything "rough" to rub against to aid in shedding.

Right now I've got my Jason's Jungle Rack Sterilites substrated in newspaper with a large plastic water dish filled to give lots of nice humidity. Oh, and a make-shift hide.

For those of you with similar set-ups, how do the snakes shed? In other words...can a snake successfully shed just buy moving around on newspaper?

Thanks,
Chris

as long as they have at least 1 rough-sided/edged object to scratch up against, they'll be ok. I've had mine on newspaper during a shed before, and she did fine. I'd get a hygrometer just to make sure that the humidity is up to about 70% during the shed. you can accomplish this goal by either placing a damp towel in the tub or over the top or something. the shed should go smoothly under these conditions. dont worry about feeding during this period of blue eyes and shedding. I use a shedding spray that helps the shed go smoothly and helps keep the scales healthy, but it is completely optional.

I use an aquarium log in my rubbemaid enclosure all the time. It has some rough edges on it. It's about 3 x 10. Keep the humidity between 70-80% during shed and you shouldn't have any problems.
