Couple of Heating Questions

elcheal Sep 29, 2004 06:34 PM

I have a ten gallon and a twenty gallon tank. My twenty gallon has a uth, sand, food bowls, hide, etc. cuz it used to be a tank for hermit crabs. I want to house a baby gecko in the ten gallon until it is old enough to be on sand. I want to have a heat lamp over the top of the tank so that i don't have to buy another uth and i figure i can use it to heat the twenty gallon when he/she goes into it. Now my question is: Could i use the basking lamp in this link-http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCTprd_id=845524441776689&FOLDERfolder_id=2534374302030050&ASSORTMENTast_id=2534374302023694&bmUID=1096500443631
if so then what watt should i use? if not then what kind of lamp should i use? Thanks for the help and sorry for the long post.

The link didn't work (for me at least). I use a 60W heat emitter and it goes 85-90F daytime. Don't use a white light use red or black they can't see those colors and it doesn't have to be UVB or have special sun like properties, because they are a nocturnal species and don't need that stuff anyway. Sorry I couldn't help more.

I put a light on top of the tank, But not for heat reasons, I just want to make sure he knows weather it is day or night, Because it is dark in my room during they day, So it is good to give light during the day and shut it off at night (unless its a night bulb) just so that he can tell weather its night or day.

so a 60 watt blub is good enough for a ten gallon tank and would heat a 20 gallon along with a uth? oh, the link isn't really a link, just copy and paste it into the address bar or use this link(it should work www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCTprd_id=845524441776689&FOLDERfolder_id=2534374302030050&ASSORTMENTast_id=2534374302023694&bmUID=1096500443631

From petsmart.com-
ESU Reptile Red Heat Basking Lamps
Description:Incandescent red heat lamp emits high heat at low light levels. Invisible to reptiles and does not disturb normal day/night cycles. 15 watt and 25 watt bulbs are cylindrical shaped. The bulb shape for 50 Watt, 75 Watt and 100 Watt is shown in the product image.

What wattage should i get if my house is always 65 degrees room temp?
Thanks- sorry don't know why the link didn't work

I'd go with the 75 watt. But go to Lowe's, Wal-Mart, Home Depot, or any reptile supply website and get a rheostat or light dimmer so you can get it adjusted to the right temp. Get one with a dial or multiple settings. The light dimmers were around $10 at Lowe's in my town. I got a thermometer and rheostat combo on sale for $20 from LLLreptile, I think they are $28 regular. Just make sure it is capable of handling the wattage of your lamp.
