boastud Jun 27, 2003 10:40 AM

I usually incubate with a mix of vermiculite and perolite, but i have heard from some leopard gecko guys that they do all perolite. WHat do you think?

Hi
i have heard people who used perlite got more then normal birthdefects.
some thiung in it can be harmfull.
also vermucilite is some thing to be carefull with.
try no to inhal the dust .
weight vermucilite same weight in water so 50% vermucilite and 50 % water then you have a nice moist .
then once a while you feel if the vermucilite is dry out but sqeesing som particals between youre fingers and when a drop come out its stil ok .
i incubate without lids so i can dry out faster.

I do all perlite, and I hatch out over 95% of my eggs, excluding one clutch. But that clutch was from a mother that was sick and subsequently died. I have hatched out 100% of 4 of 5 clutches this year, excluding eggs that when dug up I said uh those aren't fertile.

What perolite to water ratio do you use? I have heard 1:5

1:1 by weight. I don't think that either will hurt the eggs. Just think that it is a preference thing. I can't find vermiculite in my area just perlite.
