Other then word of mouth. Are there good listings, etc. I'm mostly just curious since most of what I learned has been by word of mouth.

...go to the show (s) to see their ACTUAL animals
"...go to the show (s) to see their ACTUAL animals"
seeing the animal is a definite plus, but not all breeders go to shows. some of the smaller (wink) -- and highly reputable -- operations work through word of mouth and advertisements.
i just looked at a dozen red foots that someone near me ordered from a breeder and they were in tough shape, some are probably not going to make it. their are some people who spoil it for the rest of us, but i think it's a minority. that said, i still think it's a good idea to get some references. also, go to group lists for the particular species you're interested in.
happy hunting,
matt

thanks so much for these efficiencies of the VIRTUAL techno age especially the www...you never know what arrived in your ACTUAL mail box...the point is try to avoid those lemons first hand to save some grief later especially those happen to be their first pet...therefore "hands-on" experience are better when attending a show, at least you can see the animal and interact directly with the breeder/dealer...and beside (and around) ; there are the bonus of having a second, third (or even hundred if you care to stick around the stand) opinions by those "animal lovers" BESIDE (and around) YOU...on-the-spot!

I've met several breeders through my local herpetological society.
Beyond that, you can find people selling animals through the listings linked at the top of the page. See "Classifieds" and "Breeders/Dealers/Stores".
Also, if you are looking for a particular species, you could ask here and someone might be able to make a recommendation. I think that's allowed on this forum. Just can't badmouth people.
How do you join a local herpetological society? and what does it require to join one?
Thanks
go to Clubs/Organizations at the top of this page.
OR, next time you attend a reptile sale, see if any herp societies are advertising.
Or google herp society.
Mine is www.stlherpsociety.org
I was newsletter editor for a couple years.
I think the fees for mine are like $15 a year.
