thinking about cup feeding.....

taralynn_hughes Jun 27, 2003 10:55 AM

We got the cage all set up, but now the crickets have started chewing through the cage at night, and who knows whether they are leaving poor Roan alone. We leave a peice of orange in there, and some cricket gutload pellets, but they still chew out. And I'm pretty sure there is nothing we can do to prevent them from getting out. So, we are thinking about cup feeding. Crickets can jump pretty high, so what prevents them from jumping out? And where should you locate the dish?

I bought my veiled and almost all my supplies from Matt Sosnow who is from Arizona...A friend showed me a pic of his veiled he bought from matt and in the pic i noticed this cool cup thing i asked him about it and when i was buying my supplies i bought one. Every now and then a few escape but for the most part they dont.....The top cuves in so when they climb up the side they just walk into the top...it also intrigues the cham more to see the crickets running up the side....another thing that stops them from jumping out is the whole thing froms somewhat of a triangle as you can see in the pic....in order to hang it i put a Twist tie through 2 of the wholes in the side and twist tie it to the side of the cage, u can also yuse the handle to hang it from a branch, or you could just set it on the bottom....i think it cost somewhere around $6 or $7 plus shipping....so if you or anyone else would like to purchase this just give me and email and i will tell you his number....

Hi-

Yes crickets can jump out, but most stay in the bowl. I have used large white deli cups for bowls, but find the feeder bowl Bill wrote about in the Ezine works best for keeping crickets from jumping out and drowning in the bowls when they fill with water. I use an automatic mister on both my indoor and outdoor cages, and the mist collects in the bowls outside (I only bowl feed crickets outside because the screen is 1/2" ). Even though there are small drain holes in the bottom of the dish it still kills some. The bowl on the link allows the crickets a place to run out of the water. Good luck with the screen you must be using a reptarium!LOL Click the link below. Hope this helps!

I just use a smaller critter keeper bin and put it so the cham can climb down and shoot from the brim. If you put gutload in the bin almost all crix stay there. If I know I have a really jumpy crix I pinch 1 or both jumping legs. I use paper towel or tp rolls in the crix bin. I pick these up when selecting the cham's food for the day, and if I don't startle them the crix are less jumpy and tend to stay in the feeding bin.
