Sand goanna is a common name that can be applied to any one of the gouldi complex, from real goulds,V.gouldi, to Flavis, V.flavirufus, even to Argus, V.panoptes and lastly crosses of the above.

The problem is, these types vary in price from about $150 to around $1000 depending on species and the specimen.

It will also present a problem, if some time in the future you want to breed it. You will then need to know what it really is, so you can make a decision what to breed it to.

So, you can find out how good this person is, by how he answers these questions. cheers FR

That's the best and most logical explaination I've heard for the need for scientific names; I want to know what I'm buying and I want to be able to look it up to get all the information I can on the animal. It is frustrating, though, with all the changes. If you look things up in an older paper or book, you discover that what you are reading about is really no longer what you looked up. Grrr.

Thats exactly the point, of course, scientist, believe what they are doing is great and with meaning. The problem is, meaning for who. And my post was, scientific nomenclature for hobbyist. But their response was, Scientific nomenclature for biologist and PHD's

As I mentioned, they are suppose to make the names to be of utility, which means of use. And the use is suppose to be for the common people, as the scientist, already know what they are dealing with(I hope)(ok, not really) Thanks Mom for showing a common application. FR
