Wintertime slow feedings?

zoolady Sep 30, 2004 02:11 AM

Hey so I have a question. My Greens now 7ft long. And she is usually eating one large rat every other week. Sometimes I feed her once a week if I have a rat taht I need to get rid of. But usually only every other.
Well, her heat light blew out about a week ago. Stupid me got it wet and ~POP~! there it went. Nearest pet store is an hour from here, so I didnt get to it for almost a week. Its been getting cold at night though. So I was quick once the weather started getting cold at night to ge her a new bulb and warm things up for her. I have a 250 WAT bulb that heats the whole cage comfortably. Keeping each side at a perfect warm/cool with the warmest being over her pool. Anyhow, I am worried now though because now she is not eating. I am wondering if the time that she was cold for had some affect on her maybe? Do they slow thier eating at this time of year? I dont remmeber if she was eating well at this time last year or not. Since she didnt eat for about the first 9 months I had her. I dont remember the time of year it was..
But her body temp is nice and warm again. And she is quite active. She usually goes into her pool when she is hungry and stares at me till I feed her. And she's done that a few times now. So I figured it meant she was ready to eat finally. But when I put her rat in she just left the water and went back into her IM NOT HUNGRY part of the cage. Maybe she just moved into the water to get warmed back up since I keep the warmest part of the cage where the pool is. but it has been almost 4 weeks since she last ate. So just wondering if its a seasonal thing? Or the fact I had her temp cooled down for 5 days? She is still active and not acting sick. No parasites. Nothing to worry about as far as I can see. But it still makes me curious.
I just took this pic of her. Going to her IM NOT HUNGRY part of the cage. And YES, she is getting ready for a NEW BIGGER cage!! HE cage is PLENTY long enough. But with her length it s getting a bit too narrow for my liking. We are moving in about 3 months. She will get her new bigger cage then. Though I love this one. It is so long and easy to keep up with. It is just too narrow.
Anyhow! What you think about her eating?

hey,
I dont have a conda but i do have a burm....a while ago i dropped my heat lamp and it broke and the temps were down about 5 days to cold.....QAfter that my burm would not eat at all....Simple solution though.....ring the temps above normal for about 2 weeks then try feeding say about 95 basking side maybe a lil less for a conda and an ambient of 85...I dont use night drops so i dont no about that....A tip: heat lamps are old fashioned...get a human heating pad with a dimmer covering half the cage it will work great there is also no need for a night time drop just leave it on....the heat pad will comfortably heat half the cage and the water bow....if you have a big cage for your conda just use heat tape wioth a thermostat and make sure the surface area dont reach more than 95 on your hot side,,,,hope this helps

I actually use both. I left the heating pad off for the summer time since my house gets to a boiling 90 degrees inside! No airconditoiining in this dump. Argh. But I have turned it back on now that the weather is getting cold again. Her tank is pretty big, so I use both the pad and the lamp. the lamp is about 2 feet from the top of her cage and aimed back twords the back. It is a 250 WAT bulb. So it warms things up perfectly! She absolutely loves to bask in it most of the time. then some days she prefers the cooler and darker side of her cage. She mainly only comes out into the light or her water to eat, poop, or shed.
I will try waiting for a few weeks andsee if it works. I'm sure your right. It is just the period of cold that has delayed her. She just pooed last night. Which means she didnt digest as fast as usual. Which would be why she isnt hungry. And I'm sure the colder temp for that period of time is the culprit!
I had just bought that bulb too.

BTW....I also like to use both the pad AND the lamp because the UV's are good for snakes skin and overall health. :D
