Rats vs. Hamsters for Baby Blood Growth

Blue_Fox Sep 30, 2004 11:20 AM

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone had seen any difference in growth rates between baby bloods fed on small rats and those fed on hamsters? Tao is now big enough to take either very small rats or medium hamsters, and I want to feed him whatever is the healthiest and best for him. I've heard that rats are better than mice; has anyone had any experience feeding hamsters?

Thanks,

I would stick with rats but only based on the theory of not having to worry about problems getting him/her to eat rats (ultimate diet) later

my opinion

I have fed rats and hamsters without problem. I have heard that hamsters are a bit fatty and not good long term unless you are fattening up for breeding. She does seem to like them though- must be like a nice cream-cake(?). I am now feeding day-old chicks and she seems to prefer those to both mice, rats and hamsters. I know of others that feed their stock an exclusive diet of chicks without any (apparent) trouble. They are also cheap- I have just bought 200 for £5.00.

Is there anyone else feeding their Bloods chicks?

I would tend to go with rats as they are overall the best. Bunnies or guinea pigs might put on fat more for you. With hamsters you have a couple things.....one, they are loose skinned and fur and watching a snake eat them is like work. Two, often snakes that take hams then don't favor going back to easier to obtain rodents......have this link of info on prey too
