A LiL pet 4 my sis

Spotted_Leopard Jun 27, 2003 11:24 AM

Ok, here's the situation. My little sister is eight years old, and when my dad bought me my aquarium, he bought a smaller one-I think a five gallon, it's measurements are 12 in.-length, 6in.-width, and about 8 1/2 in.-height. Since I'm getting a gecko, she wants a small pet, too.

It needs these five things:

1. She can pick it up and handle it
2. It will be easy to care for-cleaning, feeding, ect.
3. It HAS to be cute
4. It can't be over a foot long, she needs something small
5. The animal is not prone to biting.

Do you know any amphibians like that? We'll do all the rest.

We thank you in advance...Jaz&Jayda

Maybe a Leopard Gecko, or White's Treefrog, or a Firebellied Toad, or a American Toad.

3 Words... African Dwarf Frog!!! There a totally aquatic species(stays under water for entire life), and ususally they will not make noise, especially females...but even if they do how loud can a frog calling under water be right? It sounds almost like a buzzing, when being called.

A 5 gallon, is a perfect and roomy size, and there easy to feed. Mine will eat frog pellets, bloodworms, etc.

Actually she said that she wanted her sister to be able to pick it up and handle it, so that would leave an aquatic frog out because you can't really handdle them.

Not anything you can handle. a whites tree frog needs a 15 gallon, and so do the others........

i would go with a firebelly toad. a leopard gecko, at 8 inches adult length, would be HUGE for a 5gal tank. american toads can get a bit big also. and, for handling purposes, the dwarf frog is out, too. my only novel suggestion would be perhaps a pac man. they get large, (5 in) are fairly slow moving, but they don't require much space, b/c they are sit-and-wait predators. not terribly interesting to watch, though.

I wouldn't think an 8-year-old should handle any of those, if even a pre-teen.

Anyway, could she get a snake? A 5-gallon is really too small for anything of the sort, though.

A small rodent, hampster or something, is what I think would be best.

Let us know what happens, and good luck! Good to hear someone trying to find some joy for their kid sister.

I agree a rodent would be good, but does she want a rodent? I would also suggest a firebellied toad. Keep us posted!
