Lost 20% of body weight

scottsdragons Sep 30, 2004 05:12 PM

I have an 8 month old male bearded dragon. He has always been healthy and a voracious eater. Three weeks ago he he started eating less and less and his body weight went from 234 grams to 212 grams. After 10 days I took him to the vet. Did the fecal, the check up, the usual and the vet could not find anything wrong......watch him and make sure he is hydrated.....duh....His body weight is now 200 grams. He eat almost nothing. Still has great color and is alert......I would greatly appreciate any ideas and remedies.

How confident are you in your vet? What fecal tests were run?
That much weight loss shouldn't just "happen" for no discernable reason--anorexia is a symptom of something else. I can give you appetite enhancing and feeding assistance tips but until you know what is causing the anorexia the problem is not going to be solved. Any other symptoms--gaping, wheezing, straining to pass feces, lethargy, discoloration, spots on the belly or tail? Is he still growing in length/height? Are his head and tail fat pads still solid? Has he lost this much weight over 3 weeks or is this weight loss just in the past 10 days?

Best,
michele
