New anacondas

ben_renick Sep 30, 2004 07:08 PM

Forget about the introduction thing with my anacondas. I just picked up a male green and a female yellow. They are in terrible shape, I had to pick them up, otherwise, they would have died within the month, and If I can prevent it I will. For the yellow and green it was only $100. I took them up to a friend at a pet store, and we found the stuff that was wrong with them. So far there are mites (both), Sever Upper Respitory (green but starting on yellow), Mouth Rot (both), Unshed Belly scales, Bite marks. A lot of problems, I just felt too sorry for them to stay there. I will post pics of them later I'm taking them to a vet this week to get the shots and seringes for their deals Just sharing conda experiances

Man! I wish you the best of luck. Some of the things you mentioned dont reaquire a vet, mites especially. Youve bitten off a heck of a lot of work but I think its great to at least try. Get em to a vet after you have a fecal sample from both snakes.

I'm not going to wait for fecal matter, I can't get into the vet until monday anyways so hopefully by then. BUT They actually had dried phecies around their anus anyways, it was clean, but not enough to know for sure. But they are going to the vet right away next week. Any suggestions to what to do to help them before then? I'm going to have to give the green a shot everyday or every other day for the respitory, and a seringe for it's mouth rot also, same for the yellow. Should I get them a humidity hut with moss? I think the mites are gone, I didn't really see any when I soaked them, I soaked them for a good 30 min, so I should have seen one or two, and the snakes look clean, so if they do, it's under their scales. But I know humidity helps with respitory, it wont do much for the green considering how bad it is, but maybe. Any suggestions would be great.

Hey, a tip for the mites.
Even if you dont see them, you know they had them and theres a good chance they still have them under the scales. I sqaw you mentioned you soaked them. But it looked like you just soaked them in the bathtub in water?
Mites can live underwater for hours! So try this, if you havent already. I learned this trick from a great herper here.
Put them in a tupperware with a lid on it. Some holes in the lid for fresh air or course! But put MINERAL OIL in the tub. Fill the tub a good ways with the mineral oil. Enough that the snakes are totally submerged in it but still have enough room to keep thier heads above it to breath. And keep them in it for a good 24 hours. This worked great with my Green when she had mites too. And for some WC snakes this year that had mites. Also rids of other parasites!

I will deffidently try that, I am going to spray them with black knight also.

The say the best defense is a good offense, and that is exactly what Black Knight is. I sprayed my entire room where the snakes were, plus inside their cages. After two weeks I never saw a mite again. That was a year ago.

Hey, I have never heard of or seen Black Knight here. Is it new?

eunectes4 Oct 05, 2004 03:57 PM

I did not read the entire thread butif you are talking about the mite product...it is not new..rather old and off the shelves.

Yeah, black knight is pretty hard to find. It's probably the best way to get rid of mites from what I know though. It's what I will be using for the next couple days, if it doesn't work then I will do the mineral oil tatic. It has never failed me before though, so I don't know. But it usually rids them in at least 3-4 days. I'm on the 4th right now, and I just took the condas to the vet today, and when I got them out, there weren't any mites on my hands so I will take that as a good sign. The only not so good thing about black knight though, is how much it is a bottle, it's like $20 per canister, but I am going to have to say I have only seen ONE place carry it, and it's not on display.
