Beautiful Female Red Tegu" NEED HELP"

Lowes99 Sep 30, 2004 08:51 PM

I would really like to know the best diet to feed my new red.
She is a sub-adult already. I Offered her strawberries and grapes and she did not want them. Is raw chicken breast a good source? Please help with any imfo on diets for her you have. Thanks ALot Derek

I would find out from the person you got her from what her diet was like.

I offer my reds a variety of fruits and berries including banana (probably their favorite), mango, papaya, avacado, kiwi, strawberies, blueberries and melons. I also give them scrambled eggs with the shell. They get ground turkey burgers (93% fat free) with friut mixed in as well. They get rodents once a week and roached every day for protien.

Rodents are your best source for animal proteins and can make up at least 90% of the diet. The additional 10% should be fruit for Red Tegus. Problematic fruit eaters can often be coaxed into eating fruit by offering canned fruit cocktails. Once they start eating this reliably you can slowly add more frsh fruit, less cocktail until you can wean them off the cocktail altogether.

I would stay away from meat cuts for human consumption such as raw chicken etc. Whole prey items are the best possible for tegus.
